Self Assessment

If your tax affairs are simple, you may not need to complete a self assessment tax return form as you may already cover this as part of your tax code. If your tax affairs are more complex, however, you’ll need to complete a self assessment. You’ll receive a fine if HMRC doesn’t receive your tax return on time.

A self assessment shows your income and capital gains (profits on the sale of certain assets) and enables you to claim tax allowances or reliefs on your tax return. If you are self-employed, a company director or need to file a self assessment tax return each year you will need to complete a tax return.
