How to pay your Self Assessment Tax Bill


Self Assessment Deadline 31st January 2018

You will need to pay any tax you owe from the previous tax year (2016/2017);
Your first payment on account (for 2017/2018) for the current tax year.

To make payment you will need your Unique Tax Reference (UTR) – a 10 digit long number with K added on the end – this can be found on any correspondence sent by HMRC such as your ‘Welcome to Self Assessment’ letter.

The payment options available to you will depend on the amount of time you have remaining before the deadline so ensure you plan ahead if you wish to pay using a certain method.

 

The Self Assessment payment methods include:

Same or next day:

Online/ Telephone Banking;
Clearing House Automated Payment System (CHAPS);
Debit card online;
Business credit card online;
Bank or building society.

3 working days:

BACS;
Direct Debit (if you have previously set up one with HMRC before);
Cheque (via the post);
5 working days;
Direct Debit (if you are setting up the Direct Debit for the first time).
